Introducing the Splash of Color Quilt Along!

Introducing the SPLASH of Color Quilt Along at Busy Hands Quilts!

My friend Shannon of The Flemings Nine suggested that in lieu of sewing gifts for each other for Christmas, we each sew a quilt in similar fabrics in any pattern.  She had the great idea to ask if others would like to quilt along with us, and why, yes, of course, the more the merrier!  We settled on black and white with a SPLASH of color as a theme, and the SPLASH of Color Quilt Along is here!  We're hoping you'd like to quilt along with us!  {There will be PRIZES!}

Quilt Along Requirements {very few!}

There is only one requirement for this quilt along.  Your quilt must be black and white with a SPLASH of color, any color.  Solids, prints, batiks, you name it, just stick to black and white with a SPLASH!

Schedule {subject to change with life's happenings!}

The SPLASH of Color Quilt Along kickoff is Tuesday, October 3rd with two weeks between each step.  On each date listed below, a linkup will be posted here on the blog, and you'll have until the 5:00 pm pacific time the day before the next link-up to add your link.

October 3 - Fabric selection
October 17 - Cutting fabric
October 31 - Piecing blocks
November 7 - Piecing blocks progress check-in
November 21 - Finished quilt tops (flimsies, quilting not required)
December 5 - Quilt top linkup closes and grand prize for finished quilt tops awarded.
January 2 - Finished Quilt Parade (after Christmas in case your quilt is a gift).
January 15 - Last day to link up a finished quilt.

Quilt patterns {help, I need some ideas!}

My mind is ever swirling with quilting ideas, but sometimes it's hard to settle on a pattern for a fabric collection.  Here are some quilt patterns that would be perfect for the SPLASH of Color Quilt Along.

Splash of Color - A Rainbow of Bright Black-and-White Quilts by Jackie Kunkel of Canton Village Quilt Works is the perfect book for the SPLASH of Color Quilt Along.  This book is also available in Kindle format in case you're like me and want to have less stuff in the house.

Below are some of the quilts from the book to help you envision your SPLASH of Color Quilt, and I counted at least 7 additional patterns in the book, and many of them show different color layouts for more ideas, such as reversing the black and white fabrics.

Black and White Fabrics {you mean two aren't enough!?!}

Fat Quarter Shop has a bounty of black and white FQ bundles!  It looks like there is something for everyone's taste here, and some of the bundles have a splash of color already included.  I found more black-and-white bundles by going through the FQ Bundles page by page instead of searching "black and white".  Here are some of the bundles.

I have like 2 black and white prints in my stash {no kidding!}, and Fat Quarter shop has generously given me a Penned Pals FQ Bundle for my quilt {thanks so much, FQS!!}  Shannon, on the other hand, has a fantastic stash that always seems to have just the right fabric for a project {I call it a useable stash}, so she's all set with her black and whites.  Or maybe you're somewhere in between Shannon and me and need just a few to fill in.  Be sure to check out Fat Quarter Shop's black and white yardage.

Fat Quarter Shop also has the perfect black and white backings for your SPLASH quilt, and they sell batting as well!

Prizes, you did say prizes, right Myra?

Why, yes I did!  Here are the generous sponsors!  If you would like to donate a prize to the QAL, please let me know ASAP, and you'll get a special shoutout on the blog and all of my social media channels.  I am looking for a list of sponsors for future QALs, as well.

  • One random entrant in all other linkups will receive a PDF quilt pattern from Busy Hands Patterns.

  • And why not go all out?  Anyone who links links up a finished quilt that measures greater than 160" around the edge will receive a PDF quilt pattern from Busy Hands Patterns {that's me} at the end of the QAL!

Spread the word, share on your blogs and social media!

I hope you'll join us in the SPLASH of Color Quilt Along!  Please share about the quilt along on your blog and social media with #splashofcolorQAL and tag me @busyhandsquilts.

Blogger's Quilt Festival - Ski to Sea Quilt

This post may contain affiliate links. Thank you for your support!

It's time for the Blogger's Quilt Festival over at Amy's Creative Side!

... Meet Ski to Sea ...

Ski to Sea is a race from Mount Baker down to Bellingham Bay which includes cross country and downhill skiing or snowboarding, downhill run, road biking, canoeing, cyclocross biking, and sea kayaking.  It's a world renowned race.  This quilt is a Ski to Sea adventure!

I designed Ski to Sea in Electric Quilt 7 to figure out how many of each color combo was needed, and one of my boys cut them with my Accuquilt Go!   The HSTs finish at 4".  The diagram above was used only for color placement and the direction of the blocks in the mountain and trees, but the sky, rocks, and water blocks were all randomly placed with no attempt made to not put like fabrics side by side.

You can view closeup pictures of the quilting in my Instagram feed.  I post a lot more in-progress pictures there.

I used several designs for the quilting, all edge to edge to make it more simple.  The sky is quilted with circles, then snowflakes along with stars and swirls on the mountain, the rocks have jagged lines, the trees have aspen leaves, and the water has sea creatures.

I love to put wool in quilts I make for my family because it breathes so well (not too hot or too cold), has a lot of fluff to accentuate the quilting, and adds a nice layer of weight.  Hobbs Heirloom Wool is washable.

Quilt Stats:

Pattern:  Ski to Sea, my own design.
Size:  Queen size, 96" square
Fabric:  Hatch fabrics and Sketch fabrics
Quilting:  Custom design, done on Gratitude.
Batting:  Hobbs Heirloom Wool
Backing and Binding:  Widescreen backing in Blue
